Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 5 Rules for Success (And What A/L Chemistry Students Can Learn)
Every year, I meet students who say the same thing:
“Sir, I want to do well in Chemistry… but it feels impossible.”
What many students don’t realise is that success is rarely about intelligence alone. It is mostly about mindset, discipline, and vision.
One person who often talks about this is Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He built success in multiple fields:
- Bodybuilding
- Acting
- Politics
- Business
In several speeches, including his famous USC commencement address, he explained his simple philosophy for success.
These ideas are not only for athletes or entrepreneurs.
They apply perfectly to A/L students preparing for challenging subjects like Chemistry.
Let’s look at these rules and how you can apply them to your own journey.
If you haven’t watched Arnold Schwarzenegger explain these rules himself, it’s worth a few minutes.
1. Find a Vision and Follow It (Trust Yourself)
Arnold often says that success starts with having a clear vision.
Without a vision, you are simply drifting.
In the context of A/L students, this means asking yourself an important question:
Why are you studying Chemistry?
Is it because:
- Your parents want you to?
- Your friends are doing it?
- Or because you truly want to achieve something with it?
Students who perform well usually have a clear reason:
- Becoming a doctor
- Entering engineering
- Building a scientific career
When your vision is clear, studying becomes purposeful.
Without vision, even small challenges feel overwhelming.
That is why I always encourage my students to imagine their future.
Once you see the destination clearly, the effort required today starts to make sense.
2. Never Think Small (Aim High)
Arnold also emphasises something very important:
Never think small.
Many students limit themselves before they even begin.
They say things like:
- “I only need a C pass.”
- “Chemistry is too difficult for me.”
This kind of thinking creates invisible limits.
But I have seen average students become top performers simply because they changed their expectations.
When students aim for excellence, their behaviour changes:
- They practise more
- They ask questions
- They revise regularly
Your goal should not be survival.
Your goal should be mastery.
Even if you fall slightly short of your goal, you will still achieve far more than you expected.
3. Ignore the Naysayers (Don’t Be Afraid to Fail)
Every ambitious goal attracts criticism.
Someone will always say:
- “Chemistry is too difficult.”
- “Very few students get good results.”
- “It’s impossible to improve.”
Arnold’s advice is simple:
Ignore the naysayers.
Failure is not proof that you cannot succeed.
It is simply information.
In my classes, I often see students struggle at the beginning of a chapter like Chemical Kinetics or Equilibrium.
But once they practise and understand the concepts, their confidence grows dramatically.
Failure during learning is normal.
Avoiding effort because of fear is the real problem.
4. Work Your Butt Off (There Are No Shortcuts)
Arnold says this very directly:
You must work hard.
There is no shortcut to success.
This is especially true in subjects like Chemistry.
Understanding theory is important, but real improvement comes from:
- Solving structured essay questions
- Analysing past papers
- Practising calculations
- Revising concepts repeatedly
Sometimes students look for “quick tricks” to score marks.
But real progress comes from consistent work over months.
In fact, many students who eventually succeed are not the most talented.
They are simply the most disciplined.
5. Give Back (Success Is Not Only About You)
Arnold’s final rule is about something deeper.
Once you achieve success, you should give back.
Success is not meaningful if it benefits only you.
For students, this can mean simple things:
- Helping a friend understand a difficult concept
- Sharing notes
- Encouraging others who are struggling
Learning becomes more powerful when it becomes collaborative.
In my own journey as a teacher, one of the most satisfying experiences is seeing students help each other succeed.
Knowledge grows when it is shared.
Final Thoughts
Success in A/L Chemistry does not depend only on intelligence.
It depends on:
- Vision
- Discipline
- Persistence
- Hard work
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s rules remind us that success begins with mindset.
When students combine the right mindset with the right study method, even difficult subjects become manageable.
If you truly want to improve in Chemistry, focus on two things:
- Develop a strong success mindset
- Follow a structured learning system
That combination changes everything.
Want Structured Guidance in Chemistry?
Many students struggle not because they are incapable, but because they lack a clear learning path.
In my Chemistry Masterclasses, I guide students step-by-step through difficult topics, past paper discussions, and structured practice methods.
Instead of studying randomly, you can follow a system that builds confidence and understanding over time.
Because success in Chemistry is not about shortcuts.
It is about learning the right way.
